7. A “Happy” Culture

Filipinos are known for their cheerful and positive outlook on life, which creates a vibrant and joyful atmosphere in the country. The emphasis on family, community, and celebration of life’s simple pleasures makes the Philippines a culturally rich and emotionally rewarding place for foreigners to experience.

The Filipino “happy” culture is infectious and leaves a lasting impression on those who visit or live in the country. Festivals and fiestas are an integral part of Filipino culture, and locals gladly invite foreigners to join in the festivities, creating a sense of unity and belonging.

Karaoke nights, a popular pastime in the Philippines, provide opportunities for locals and foreigners alike to bond over songs and laughter. Spontaneous gatherings with friends and neighbors, known as “get-togethers” or “barkadas,” further exemplify the Filipino love for companionship and enjoyment of life.

6. Affordability

Another appealing aspect of the Philippines for foreigners is its affordability. From accommodation and transportation to food and entertainment, the cost of living in the Philippines is relatively low compared to many Western countries.

This affordability allows foreigners to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle without breaking the bank. Although Filipino street food isn’t quite as popular among foreigners as the street foods in Thailand and Vietnam, the Philippines does have some delicious “lechon” (crispy fried baby pork). It comes with the added bonus of indulging in street food and exploring the local cuisine without worrying about excessive expenses.

The cost of renting a house or apartment is also relatively cheaper compared to most Western countries, allowing foreigners to enjoy more spacious and comfortable accommodations at a fraction of the cost. Whether it’s renting a beachfront villa or experiencing the vibrant nightlife in cities like Manila or Cebu, the Philippines offers a high quality of life at an affordable price.

6a. Learn a Hobby For Cheap

By the way, on a personal note, the Philippines provided me a wonderful opportunity to learn scuba diving at an affordable price. I got my PADI scuba diving certifications (both beginner and advanced) for a fraction of the cost that it would have been in the United States.

Ever wanted to learn tennis or the guitar? The Philippines has a vibrant tennis community, including lots of cheap tennis lessons. They also have many skilled musicians available to teach you how to play musical instruments.

5. Relatively Safe

Safety is a top priority for foreigners looking to visit or live in a new country. The Philippines is generally considered relatively safe for tourists and expats, with low crime rates in many areas. As in any country, it’s important to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines, but many foreigners feel comfortable and at ease while exploring the Philippines.

The presence of friendly locals and a strong community spirit contributes to the overall feeling of security. The country’s robust tourism industry has also led to increased security measures in popular tourist areas. With proper research and awareness, foreigners can enjoy a safe and memorable experience in the Philippines.

Trouble and crime can be found in any city or country, so always be on the lookout. There are sections of towns where it is not recommended for foreigners to visit. The main things to be on the lookout for in the Philippines are pickpockets and bag snatchers. Don’t make yourself a target by dressing fancy, being flashy, or wearing expensive wearables.

4. The Favorable Immigration Policy

Foreigners find the Philippines to be an attractive destination due to its favorable immigration policy. The country offers various visa options for foreigners looking to stay long-term, whether for work, retirement, or leisure. The ease of obtaining visas and the welcoming attitude towards expatriates make the Philippines a popular choice for foreigners seeking a new adventure.

Retirees, for example, can take advantage of the Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV), which offers benefits such as multiple-entry privileges and tax exemptions. Digital nomads and entrepreneurs are also attracted to the Philippines due to its Special Visa for Employment Generation, which allows them to live and work in the country while contributing to its economic growth.

My personal favorite though, is the simple tourist visa. By occasionally visiting immigration offices, you can stay in the Philippines for up to 3 years! The process works by extending your tourist visa one month after arrival. From there on out you can extend in six month increments.*

*Only applies to certain countries.

Whether it’s retiring in the picturesque province of Cebu, working in the bustling capital of Manila, or exploring business opportunities in emerging cities like Davao or Cagayan de Oro, the Philippines provides a welcoming environment for foreigners to live and thrive.

3. Over 7000+ Islands To Explore

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands, each offering unique and breathtaking landscapes to explore. From pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters to lush mountains and vibrant cities, there is no shortage of exciting destinations to discover in the Philippines.

Whether you’re a nature lover, adventurer, or culture enthusiast, the diversity of the Philippines’ islands offers something for everyone. Foreigners are often enchanted by the natural beauty and cultural richness that the country has to offer. Travelers can hop from one island to another, an experience called “island-hopping”, while taking in the different dialects, cuisine, and traditions that each island has to offer.

Whether it’s island hopping in Palawan’s picturesque Bacuit Archipelago, surfing the waves in Siargao, or exploring the historical sites of Intramuros in Manila, the Philippines provides a wide range of experiences that cater to all interests.

2. The Philippines Loves Foreigners

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and friendliness towards foreigners. From the warm smiles to the genuine interest in getting to know visitors, foreigners often feel welcomed and appreciated in the Philippines. I have been to a few Filipino hosted birthday parties and holiday events, and they always go out of their way to make you feel like family.

This welcoming attitude creates a sense of belonging and makes foreigners feel at home in a new and unfamiliar environment. Unlike many other countries where foreigners may face prejudice or judgment, the strong respect and acceptance that Filipinos have for foreigners are often cited as one of the main reasons why they fall in love with the country.

Whether it’s the locals going out of their way to help or the friendly conversations with strangers, the genuine kindness and warmth of the Filipino people leave a lasting impact on foreigners.

1. Dating Filipino Women

Perhaps the top reason why foreigners are drawn to the Philippines is the allure of dating Filipino women. Known for their warm hospitality, stunning beauty, and strong family values, Filipino women are often considered ideal partners for many foreigners. In addition, they are fluent in English.
