The Passport Bro phenomenon has become a wildly popular trend amongst Western men who travel abroad seeking hookups, relationships, and marriage with foreign women. However, for Passport Bros, the trend does not come without heavy criticism, especially from modern women from their home countries.
Understanding the complexities of social behaviors and preferences can be intriguing, especially when discussing the Passport Bros phenomenon. In case you didn’t know, the term “Passport Bros” refers to men who choose to date women outside their home countries, often pursuing what they perceive as more fulfilling relationships than what they find domestically. I wrote an article highlighting the key traits that define exactly what a Passport Bro is.
Is it jealousy? Is it hypocrisy? Or is there a solid basis to those women’s arguments for having disdain for the Passport Bros? That’s what this article will aim to explore. Here are seven reasons why women hate the Passport Bros.
#7 – Passport Bros Point The Finger At Modern Women
Some may argue that the Passport Bros movement externalizes their relational failures, blaming local women from their native country rather than introspecting on personal areas for growth. This lack of self-improvement and accountability can be frustrating for modern women to observe. This, in turn, combined with the possibility of affecting global perceptions of Americans, the women may fear that the Passport Bros are tarnishing the reputation of Americans.
In my brief experience in the Passport Bro Facebook communities, I witnessed many women pointing the finger at modern women, blaming them for ruining the dating culture in Western countries like the United States. However, my observations highlight why I think the blame is twofold: seeing a lack of maturity from the men in the Passport Bro communities.

#6 – Implication of American Women’s “Inadequacy”
The underlying premise of seeking relationships abroad, because local women are somehow lacking, is offensive to many modern women. It implies a failure on the part of American women to meet specific standards, which can be inherently disrespectful.
However, in my experience, dating in America was quite difficult, and I found that many women had bizarrely high standards for what they wanted in a boyfriend. Then, when I started dating overseas, I finally felt like a catch again. And I found foreign women to be more polite, attentive, and kind than those from my home country.
#5 – Accusations of Misogyny and “Toxic Masculinity“
The mainstream media often portrays the Passport Bros as being misogynists and sex tourists, veering into “toxic masculinity.” Unfortunately, this portrayal is occasionally correct, as I learned with my brief period in the Passport Bro social media communities.
However, it is unfair to paint all Passport Bros with this picture, as many approach international dating with sincerity and genuine intentions. Many Passport Bros have fired back, expressing disappointment in modern women’s attitudes of “I don’t need a man” or “men are the problem.”

#4 – Hypocrisy: Modern Women Seek Foreign Men Too
Although many American women despise the Passport Bros, hypocrisy emerges when some also venture overseas to find relationships and sometimes even for their pleasure-seeking adventures. This phenomenon is known as “Passport Sistas,” which, like the Passport Bros, can be for genuine long-term relationships or female sex tourism. Popular travel destinations include the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe.
Moreover, romance novels frequently feature plots in which a foreign man sweeps a woman off her feet, and they live happily ever after. This further highlights the hypocrisy of shaming Western men when they go to find connections with foreign women overseas.
#3 – Objectification of Foreign Women
A significant concern of modern women is how Passport Bros objectifies and “exoticizes” foreign women. Passport Bros are often accused of treating these women not as equals but as novelties or trophies and exploiting them, which reflects the broader issue of misogyny.
However, as a seasoned traveler and someone who has dated women from a variety of different countries, my experience has always been of mutual attraction. On many occasions, women have made the first move on me, approaching me and starting conversations. And I use Bumble, which requires women to send the first message.

#2 – Fear That The Good Men Are Leaving
Some women deny that they are jealous that men from their own countries are seeking relationships with foreign women overseas, saying things such as “you can have them.” It’s true that some of the men in the Passport Bro communities are not highly successful and lack financial stability. They can only take cheap vacations to destinations like Sosua or Medellin for a week of financial transactions with foreign women.
However, many of the men leaving as Passport Bros are highly successful. Many of the Passport Bros I have met have college educations and have careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Education, and Mathematics). Therefore, they are capable of working remotely as digital nomads or starting their own companies overseas. Lastly, traveling can be expensive, so one could assume that many Passport Bros are financially stable enough to sustain long-term travel.

#1 – Perceived Betrayal and Rejection of Local Women
Lastly, many modern American women view the actions of Passport Bros as an act of betrayal, suggesting a lack of loyalty or commitment to women from their own country. This can be seen as rejecting their local dating pool in favor of women from other cultures.
I can only speak for myself, but dating women from other cultures has been an enriching and rewarding experience. I understand why some American women feel inadequate because of it. Perhaps it would be best if everyone chose their own path that works best for them.
