And here’s why: they don’t obsess over their beauty. They don’t carry an attitude, nor have any high maintenance vibes—they’re just easygoing, fun, and real. They’re not spending hours taking selfies or posting provocative pics online. They’re about being genuine, which makes them awesome partners.
The best part about dating overseas is there are tons of the “girl next door” type in every single country I’ve visited. These women aren’t rare; they’re everywhere, from Thailand to Colombia and even back in my home country of the US. You just need to know how to find them.

5 Tips on Finding Girl Next Door Types Abroad
#1: Immerse Yourself in Local Culture
If you are already traveling and in a foreign country, here are a few options to meet “girl next door” type women.
- Partake in Local Community Events: Dive into the culture by attending local events, festivals, and outdoor markets. You might be surprised at the variety of events going on in foreign countries. For example, in Bangkok I love going to the night markets where you are likely to see many women (not working in bars) that are hanging out. In Medellin, Colombia I met a beautiful woman at an “healthy products expo” convention. These are prime opportunities to meet residents who are welcoming and actively involved in their communities.
- Volunteer: Offering your time to community service projects can connect you with likeminded people who value kindness and service. In fact, you may not have heard of “voluntourism” or “voluncations” but they are actually one of the hidden ways to travel on a budget. Often times you can receive free lodging and food if you are willing to offer your time for worthwhile projects overseas. #2: Embrace Everyday Life
Many countries that I visit are 3rd world countries where jobs and high paying jobs are not plentiful. However, my expat friends and I share many opinions in common, and one that we all agree on is that women who tend to have jobs are often quality women.
- Working in Shopping Malls: Overseas, I meet quality women all the time working in shopping malls. They often work in retail: restaurants, coffee shops, and clothing stores. And don’t discount the many women that are educated and work as lawyers, nurses, or real estate agents.
- Exploration of Public Spaces: Visit local parks, beaches, or hiking outdoor spaces where residents relax and enjoy their leisure time. For example, in Medellin, Colombia, one of my favorite places to go is Unidad Deportiva de Belen, a massive outdoor sports complex. These settings are ideal for encounters with genuine people.
- Frequent Local Eateries and Bookshops: Instead of the tourist traps, choose local cafés, small eateries, and bookstores. These establishments often attract locals who appreciate genuine conversations and a slower pace of life. Also, instead of nightclubs and bars, consider daytime activities. Coffee shops are one of my favorite places to hangout during the day.
#3: Use Technology Wisely
- Dating Apps and Websites: For online dating, you are more likely to find ‘girls next door’ on Bumble than you will on Tinder. Although, it may be better to find them in public than on online dating, because many “girl next door” types don’t like using online dating.
- Social Media Community Groups: Join local interest groups or forums on social media to connect with residents sharing similar hobbies or seeking community engagement. As a traveling tennis player, I always join the local Facebook community of tennis players in each city I visit. It is easy to find other players, including women, to meet for tennis games.

That’s why it is better to work on your “daygame” skills, and make casual, public approaches during the daytime.

- Practice Language and Cultural Sensitivity: Learning the basics of the local language and cultural nuances can take you beyond just being a “tourist”, creating more authentic interactions. I strive to practice foreign languages for five minutes every day, using Duolingo.
- Initiate Conversations: Being proactive about engaging in friendly conversation. The key to remember is that if you wait on other people to initiate conversations and interactions, most of the time they won’t. As a man, you must take the lead. And of course, don’t take it personally if someone doesn’t want to engage in conversation with you.
- Sign Up for Group Physical Activities: Participate in group excursions or fitness classes like dance, yoga, or trekking to meet locals who value health, adventure, and camaraderie. You can find some of the most beautiful women in yoga classes!
