The Philippines, a vibrant and diverse country in Southeast Asia, has captured the hearts of many foreigners, including myself, for various reasons. I have personally spent over a year of my life in the Philippines and have made four separate trips to the country so far.
Whether it’s the opportunity to date Filipino women, explore the beautiful islands, take advantage of the favorable immigration policy, experience a relatively safe environment, enjoy the affordability of living, or embrace the happy culture, the Philippines offers a unique and unforgettable experience for those who choose to make it their home away from home.
In this article, we’ll delve into the enticing reasons why you may consider the Philippines as your next vacation destination or as a place to retire and call home, especially if you are a single male traveler.
7) A “Happy” Culture
Filipinos are known for their cheerful and positive outlook on life, which creates a vibrant and joyful atmosphere in the country. The emphasis on family, community, and celebration of life’s simple pleasures makes the Philippines a culturally rich and emotionally rewarding place for foreigners.
One of first culture shocks I experienced visiting the Philippines was the Filipino “happy” culture that is both infectious and leaves a lasting impression on those who visit. Along with the festivals and fiestas that are an integral part of the culture, Filipinos love their Karaoke nights filled with drinking, singing, and dancing. But my favorite part of the “happy” culture is how Filipinos seem to be joyful despite having less material possessions than the people of my home country of the United States.
6) Affordability
Another appealing aspect of the Philippines for foreigners is its affordability. From accommodation and transportation to food and entertainment, the cost of living in the Philippines is relatively low compared to many Western countries.
This affordability allows foreigners to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle without breaking the bank. Although I don’t enjoy Filipino street food when compared to Thailand’s and Vietnam’s, the Philippines does have some delicious “lechon” (crispy fried baby pork). But, generally speaking, groceries and eating out are at a fraction of the cost as the United States.
The cost of renting a house or apartment is also relatively cheaper compared to most Western countries, especially if you are able to stay in the Philippines long enough to sign a lease on an apartment. My apartment in Cebu City, in an ideal location next to Ayala Shopping Center, was only $600 per month. On shorter trips, you may need to rent a hotel, and those are a lot cheaper than Western countries as well.

Learn Hobbies For Cheap In The Philippines
By the way, the Philippines provided me a wonderful opportunity to learn scuba diving at an affordable price. I got my PADI scuba diving certifications (both beginner and advanced) for a fraction of the cost that it would have been in the United States.
Ever wanted to learn a new hobby such as tennis or playing the guitar? The Philippines has a vibrant tennis community, including lots of affordable tennis lessons. They also have many skilled musicians available to teach you how to play musical instruments.
5) Relatively Safe
Safety is a top priority for foreigners looking to visit or live in a new country and the Philippines is generally considered relatively safe for tourists and expats, with low crime rates in many areas. As in any country, it’s important to exercise caution and follow common sense safety guidelines, but many foreigners feel comfortable and at ease while exploring the Philippines.
Throughout my time in Cebu City, I never had a single problem or issue regarding safety. Trouble and crime can be found in any city or country, so always be on the lookout. There are sections of towns where it is not recommended for foreigners to visit, like Colon street in Cebu for example. The main things to be on the lookout for are pickpockets and bag snatchers. Don’t make yourself a target by dressing fancy, being flashy, or wearing expensive wearables.

4) A Favorable Immigration Policy
Foreigners find the Philippines to be an attractive destination due to its favorable immigration policy. Essentially, it is much easier to stay in the Philippines long-term than many other Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam or Thailand. The visa that I and many other expats take advantage of is the simple tourist visa. By occasionally visiting immigration offices, you can stay in the Philippines for up to 3 years! The process works for United States passport holders by:
- Obtaining a one month tourist visa upon arrival
- Extending your tourist visa one month at an immigration office
- ***From there on out you can extend in six month increments
***Only applies to certain countries. This is how the process worked for me but remember, due your own research and check for updates before planning your trip.
After three years of extensions, foreigner “tourists” must travel outside the country for a border run and then can start the whole process over again. Other visa options are available as well. Retirees, for example, can take advantage of the Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV), which offers benefits such as multiple-entry privileges and tax exemptions.

3) Over 7000+ Islands To Explore
The Philippines is country of more than 7,000 islands, including world-class beaches, incredible scuba diving, and mountains to hike. There is no shortage of exciting destinations to discover in the Philippines. Whether you’re a nature lover, adventurer, or culture enthusiast, the diversity of the Philippines’ islands offers something for everyone.
Several of my favorite adventurous activities are on the island of Cebu:
- Canyoneering in Kawasan Falls
- Scuba diving with the sardines in Moalboal
- Swimming with the whale sharks in Oslob
- Island hopping to Bohol, Dumaguete, or Leyte
- Hiking Osmeña Peak on Mount Labalasan
2) The Philippines Welcomes Foreigners
Filipinos are known for their hospitality and friendliness towards foreigners. From the warm smiles to the genuine interest in getting to know visitors, foreigners often feel welcomed and appreciated in the Philippines. I have been invited to a few Filipino hosted birthday parties and holiday events, and they always go out of their way to make you feel like family.
One of the reasons may be due to United States involvement in saving the Philippines during World War II. General MacArthur’s famous words, I Shall Return, were a commitment to return to the Philippines after having to flee due to threat of Japanese capture. His troops returned to the Philippines and fought bravely to free the Philippines of Japanese hold. You’ll notice street named and statues dedicated to General MacArthur in various islands in the Philippines.
1) Dating Filipino Women
Perhaps the top reason why foreigner men are drawn to the Philippines is the allure of dating Filipino women. Known for their warm hospitality, stunning beauty, and strong family values, Filipino women are often considered ideal partners for many foreigners.

Of all the countries I’ve visited, perhaps the Philippines has been the most pleasant dating culture to experience. Although every woman is different, I found most Filipina women to be attractive both on the insides and outsides. From their exotic, sun-kissed skin and petite figures, to their kind and nurturing personalities, the Philippines is an ideal location to find a girlfriend or wife for a long-term relationship.
