A Guide To International Age-Gap Relationships For Expats

As someone who has traveled extensively, I’ve seen many age-gap relationships in different countries – some appear healthy, while others seem questionable. An age gap relationship typically refers to a large age difference between romantic partners, usually an older man and a younger woman.

When I was in my early 30s, I’ll never forget my first trip to the Philippines in 2019. On my first day, I saw several gorgeous, young Filipina women walking in the mall with their older, retired expat boyfriends. They were holding hands in public, and nobody even batted an eye. At first, I was in shock, but after a while, I, too, became accustomed to it. I learned that it is important to remain nonjudgmental and adaptable to different cultures.

A classic example is Leonardo DiCaprio, who has consistently dated women in their early 20s despite being well over 20 years older than them. While age gaps don’t inherently mean a relationship is unbalanced, they present unique challenges that both partners should navigate thoughtfully. With open communication, mutual respect, and realistic expectations, age-gap couples can build strong foundations.

In some cases, especially in certain cultures and countries, significant age gaps may be frowned upon and point to problematic power dynamics. However, let’s keep an open mind and approach each instance with nuance and empathy. Fortunately, I’ve witnessed many healthy age-gap relationships in which both the man and woman were getting their needs met.

What is an Age-Gap Relationship?

Image of 20 year age-gap-relationship, 45 year old man with younger 25 year old girlfriend, with text "Dating Younger Women".

An age-gap relationship occurs when there is a significant age difference between the two partners. Typically, this refers to an older man dating a younger woman, though it can also apply to older women dating younger men.

The age gap can vary quite a bit, but often, it is a difference of 10 or more years. Some common age-gap relationships might look like this:

  • A 30-year-old man dating a 20-year-old woman (10-year gap)
  • A 45-year-old man dating a 30-year-old woman (15-year gap)
  • A 60-year-old man dating a 40-year-old woman (20-year gap)

Even larger age gaps of 30, 40, or 50 years are not unheard of. The key defining feature is that the man is considerably older than the woman.

Age gap relationships tend to generate controversy because of concerns over power imbalances, different life stages, and questions of motives. It’s important to keep an open mind. I grew up in the United States, where Western culture generally frowns upon age-gap relationships and perpetuates the notion that someone is being taken advantage of. As long as nothing illegal is being done and the woman is at least 18 years old, it is not against the law.

One thing is for sure: you don’t want to bring your young Filipina girlfriend to the United States if there is a significant age gap. You will get quite a few dirty looks!

Regardless of one’s views, these relationships are pretty visible, especially in expat and travel communities where older Western men frequently date local younger women. The key is ensuring healthy relationship dynamics despite the age difference.

How to Find an Age-Gap Relationship Overseas

One of the easiest ways to find an age-gap relationship overseas is to use online dating sites and be strategic with your searches. Many dating sites, like my favorite, InternationalCupid, allow users to specify their acceptable age range for potential matches. Focus your searches on women who have listed a wide acceptable age range on their profiles, such as 18-50 or 20-60, for example. This indicates they are open to dating much older men.

On the flip side, for example, if a woman’s setting is 25-35 as her acceptable age range or “seeking,” and you are much older than that, you should probably not waste your time messaging her.

Here is an example of a Kenyan woman on InternationalCupid who is open to an age-gap relationship. Although she is 25 years old, she is “seeking” a man 35-80 living in Germany and a long-term relationship.

You can also target your searches geographically, looking for women in countries where age-gap relationships are more culturally accepted, such as the Philippines, Thailand, parts of Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Africa. Join sites that have large international user bases. Be upfront about your age and what you are looking for in your profile.

Visiting countries where substantial age differences in relationships are common can also present opportunities to meet a potential partner. Places like the Philippines, Thailand, Colombia, and Kenya have established infrastructures to support relationships between younger local women and older foreign men. Being present in the country and socializing may lead to introductions through friends or chance encounters.

Countries Where Age-Gap Relationships are Culturally Acceptable

Age-Gap Relationships in The Philippines

The Philippines is one of the most culturally accepting countries regarding age-gap relationships. It’s prevalent to see older retired Western men dating young Filipinas in their 20s and 30s, creating an age gap of 30-50 years.

I like to joke with my expat friends in the Philippines, telling them that they wouldn’t be living there if it wasn’t for the ability to date younger, beautiful women. They joke back that they are only in the Philippines for the food.

Unlike in other parts of Asia, like Thailand and Vietnam, there is no stigma associated with large age gaps between couples. Filipinos tend to be open-minded and nonjudgmental about relationships. Family and friends are unlikely to criticize or object to an age-gap relationship.

Filipino culture emphasizes family and financial security, so many women consider older foreign men stable providers. The opportunity to date or marry a foreigner can be life-changing for them. Because of that, there is less stigma around large age differences. Older men are seen as mature and established.

Age-Gap Relationships in Thailand

Thailand presents a more complex situation. While you’ll see many older male tourists with young Thai women, these are often transactional relationships. Within mainstream Thai culture, women still prefer men who are closer to their age. Thai women are unlikely to pursue relationships with men 30 or 40 years their senior unless the man offers financial support, essentially a sugar daddy arrangement.

Unlike the Philippines, ordinary middle-class Thai women often seek connections with Thai men in their age range. The culture emphasizes peer relationships. While some age differences are accepted, anything beyond 10-15 years is still relatively taboo in my experience.

Age-Gap Relationships in Eastern Africa – Rwanda, Uganda, & Kenya

Certain countries in Eastern Africa are more open to age-gap relationships, including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania. An older man is seen as capable of providing stability and is coveted. I even watched a YouTube video with a beautiful Kenyan woman where she stated that “all men are seen as ATMs.”

In Kenya, it is not unusual to see older European, American, or Australian men dating much younger Kenyan women. The age gap can often be 20-30 years or more. Kenyan women may be attracted to the stability and resources an older foreign man can provide. Foreign men may be attracted to the beauty and perceived submissiveness of younger Kenyan women.

Eastern African women may seek relationships with older foreign men as a pathway to a better life. This power dynamic needs to be navigated carefully to ensure an equal partnership.

Age-Gap Relationships Versus Sugar Relationships

Although similar, there is a big difference between age-gap relationships and sugar relationships. In age-gap relationships, the couple is usually in a committed monogamous relationship and often lives together. The woman receives financial support from her older foreign boyfriend, but there is an emotional connection and commitment. I’ve seen plenty of significant age-gap relationships in the Philippines, where “love was in the air,” so to speak.

Sugar relationships are typically non-committed and non-monogamous arrangements. Sometimes, this is called “no strings attached” or having a mistress. The sugar baby does not live with their sugar daddy, and the relationship centers around providing financial support in exchange for companionship and intimacy. There are no expectations of commitment or a long-term future in sugar relationships. However, sugar daddy relationships can often be long-term and meet on a set schedule.

While both relationships involve an element of mutual benefit, age-gap relationships tend to have a genuine emotional and romantic connection. In contrast, sugar relationships function more as an exchange of intimacy for financial support. Being clear on the type of relationship and defining boundaries and expectations upfront is vital for the health of both dynamics.

3 Keys To Healthy Age-Gap Relationships

Image for blog post section about 3 Keys to Healthy Age-Gap Relationships, image has hot 35 year old Colombian woman with 70 year old American boyfriend.

For any relationship to be healthy and prosperous, there must be honesty, clear boundaries, and mutual respect between partners. This is especially important in age-gap relationships, which face unique challenges.

1) Honesty about Expectations

When dating overseas, the biggest thing I have learned is to be more transparent about my expectations and intentions. Whether I am playing the field, looking for a girlfriend, or looking for a long-term relationship, just be honest, or it will come back to haunt you.

And when there is a significant age gap, partners may have different expectations about the relationship. The older partner may be looking for companionship and intimacy, while the younger partner wants financial stability. Or the younger partner may wish to marry and have kids, while the older partner doesn’t.

Whatever the case, it’s crucial for both people to openly communicate their expectations, needs, and dealbreakers from the start. This prevents misunderstandings down the road.

2) Set Clear Boundaries

Partners should set clear boundaries along with expectations. For example, will the relationship be monogamous or open? Will you live together or separately? What level of financial support will be provided? It’s important to talk about these things to avoid confusion and misunderstandings.

One of my biggest misunderstands was with a potential girlfriend in Colombia. The confusion was over monogamy. I assumed that we were in a monogamous relationship, although I never spoke directly with her about it. I was dating her as I would typically do in the United States. She had been going on dates with other men and reasoned that she assumed I was seeing other women, too. I wasn’t. We had been together for several months, and she lived with me part-time. The lesson I learned was to talk about these things up front.

3) Mutual Respect

With a big age gap comes differences in life experience. The older partner may underestimate the younger partner’s maturity, and the younger partner may not appreciate the elder’s wisdom.

In the Philippines, one of the biggest frustrations that my expat friends complain about is that their partners display immature behavior, such as temper tantrums and cold shoulders. It’s important to realize that these experiences are possible when engaging in a large age-gap relationship.

To work through differences, partners must respect each other as equals with valid perspectives. Rather than making assumptions, they should listen and try to understand their partner’s point of view. Some behaviors can not be tolerated, and taking a break from the situation may be best.

Age-Gap Relationship Advice Based On Your Age

Me with a beautiful Colombian girlfriend while visiting the Royal Palace in Spain. At first, the language barrier was strong, but after a few months of dating her, my Spanish was much improved. Our age gap was 10 years.

Here is some anecdotal advice that I have developed through my own experiences, the witnessing of other healthy age-gap relationships, and many conversations with expats worldwide.

If you are under 40 years old…

As a relatively young guy in the dating market (I’m in my mid-30s), I have many options in nearly every country I visit overseas. The sweet spot for me is dating women above 25 and below my current age of 35. I don’t prefer younger than 25, even though it is available to me, because I wouldn’t say I like to party. I don’t drink alcohol or use drugs, and I like to be in bed by 10 pm.

Although it is not illegal, women who are still teenagers (18 or 19) are young and beautiful, but they still have a lot of growing up to do. I’ve found that women who are 20-24 years old are often still having fun with the party lifestyle or maybe too busy with school and work.

Every woman is different, but I’ve had the most success and contentment with women who are 25-35 years old and have reached a phase where they are starting to consider their long-term plans and may be more willing to settle down.

If you are between 41 and 60 years old…

Dating younger women is still on the table; however, consider prioritizing your fitness and financial security. Guys in this age range can do extremely well overseas if they have maintained their physical bodies well. Women overseas often don’t even view them as being “old.”

Work out and walk to maintain your physical body. You’ll still be able to do things that require energy, whether it be in the bedroom or adventurous things like hiking, traveling, and playing sports. Often, women overseas prefer men in this category over me because of their wisdom and perceived financial security. In fact, several women have told me that I’m too young. They think that I would be more likely to cheat or explore other options than an older man.

If you are 60+ years old…

Target countries where age-gap relationships are more culturally acceptable, especially the Philippines, Cambodia, and Eastern Africa. One advantage you might have over younger men is a retirement plan: social security, 401k, or pension. In certain countries, you can thrive financially because of the low cost of living. I’ve met many men in Southeast Asia that are living “the good life” on the beach with just their social security funds.

Of course, as always, take extensive measures to care for your physical and mental health. My buddy Steve, living in Medellin, Colombia, is 74 years old, but he looks like he is only 50. He attributes his youthful look to age-gap relationships with younger women, exercise, and a healthy diet.
